| WOOD AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Wood, the most eco-friendly material

In a well-managed forest, the trees regrow very quickly (pines in 30 years; oaks in 120). Trees protect us from global warming by absorbing CO² as they grow. Its use in so many situations, beams, furniture, flooring, packaging… means CO² is trapped forever.

PEFC certification, a Bourdaud commitment

In 2004, Bourdaud SA achieved PEFC certification. This means that it is committed to complying, and ensuring that its service providers, loggers and cutters comply too, with a code of practice ensuring the forest is respected, guaranteeing its controlled regrowth. These days, most of the timber processed by Bourdaud SA comes from PEFC certified forests.

All's well with wood

When Bourdaud SA processes a log, it generates sawn products (beams, planks…) and by-products: bark, sawdust, edgings, ends… These account for some 50% of the log and play a major role in sustainable development :

• Shavings, bark and chips are used as fuel in wood-fired boilers instead of fossil fuels.
• Small waste pieces, sawdust and chips are made into panels.
• Pine bark is used as compost or mulch.

Using waste bark for heating at Bourdaud

Aware that it is essential to prepare for the planet's future by caring for nature, Bourdaud acquired a Wood Energy boiler in 2005. Not only does this facility enable it to burn the oak bark it produces, it also heats the company's dryers and the buildings where the dry wood is worked.
